Why should we do yoga?


21st of June, is celebrated as "International Yoga Day" every year. Yoga is a set of postures, called "asanas" that have great health benefits. Yoga is the overall transformation of a person which aims to spiritual enlightenment. 

Why should we do yoga?

Yoga has the power to calm your mind ans strengthen your body. Whether you are old or young, fit or overweight, yoga will always benefit you. Some people use yoga for relaxation, while others use it for meditation. Yoga generally includes your breathing attention. 

People of Western countries thinks yoga just as a practice of stretching body and doing asanas. Yoga is much more than just stretching. It gives physical as well as mental peace and calmness to the body. Yoga includes breathing practices, meditation, chanting and visualisation exercises.



Practicing yoga on regular basis can help you keep your body healthy, strong and flexible. It provides many benefits to our body including:

2. Maintain blood sugar level
3. Improves posture
4. Boosts metabolism
5. Calm down fear and anxiety
6. Reduces chronic pain
7. Increases vitality

Yoga generally focuses on the attention of your breathing. Breath and mind are connected with each other. It means working on breath can change mental status too. It is very difficult to calm your mind, so working on breath is a very important aspect of practicing yoga exercises. It will maintain mental and emotional level in your body. 

Square breathing is a technique practiced during yoga asanas. It includes the following steps:
1. Inhale for 4 seconds.
2. Hold breath for 4 seconds.
3. Exhale for 4 seconds.
4. Keep empty for 4 seconds.
It make one cycles. Doing 12 such cycles a day will take your mental status to a different peaceful level. It makes your mind calm, focused and increases your lifespan.


The main purpose of yoga is meditation and not postures. When your body is still and your mind is controlled by the breath, you are in the best position to meditate properly. Yoga practices prepare you to meditate effectively and enhances your meditation.
There are many practices of yoga meditation:
1. Chakra meditation
2. Mantra meditation
3. Trataka

The purpose of meditation practice is to improve one's health, well-being and performance. The main goal of meditation is:
1. Purify the mind
2. Reduces negative emotions and thoughts
3. Achieve enlightenment and liberation


Yoga lowers blood pressure and lower down the heart beat. A low heart beat help the people suffering from high blood pressure problem or any heart disease. Yoga also helps in lowering cholesterol and triglyceride level and maintaining a good immune system. 

Yoga helps in building strength, awareness and harmony in mind and body.Scientists found that yoga is useful for people having asthma, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, multiple sclerosis and heart diseases. Practicing yoga on regular basis help your overall body and mind to improve.
