CORONAVIRUS

Coronaviruses are the kind of viruses that affect the respiratory tract of mammals. They can range from common cold, pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and can also affect the gut. "Corona" is a Latin word which means "halo" or "crown" and the name is based on the crown-like projections on their surfaces.

Over last 70 uears, coronavirus was only found in mice, rats, dogs, cats, turkeys, horses, pigs and cattle. Human coronaviruses (HCoV), OC43 and 229E, were first identified in 1960s with the patients having common cold.

Common types of coronavirus include:
-229E (alpha coronavirus)
-NL63 (alpha coronavirus)
-OC43 (beta coronavirus)
-HKU1 (beta coronavirus)

In 2019, a new coronavirus was identified in Wuhan, China. It was named as 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-n-Cov). On January 31, 2020, the spread of virus is observed in the people of U.S. and World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a public health emergency relating to 2019-nCov.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of the coronavirus may vary from person to person. It may take 2-14 days after the infection to notice the symptoms. Some common symptoms that can be observed include:
- Fever
- Breathlessness
- Cough
- Exacerbated asthma
- fatigue

Currently, there is no cure or vaccine available for the coronavirus. Taking care of yourself is the best treatment of this virus. It may include:
- Drinking enough water
- Avoid smoking
- Take proper rest

TRANSMISSION

The possible reasons of spreading coronavirus may include:
- Sneezing and coughing without covering the mouth can spread the virus through air.
- Shaking hands or any other kind of touch with the person that has the coronavirus can pass on the virus from one person to another.
- Touching any surface that has the virus and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth can spread the virus.

The spread of the coronaviruses can lead to serious medical problems in the patients like- Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS).

SARS

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) caused by the SARS-CoV coronavirus is typically a life threatening form of pneumonia. The symptoms of SARS include- dry coughing, chills, diarrhea, breathlessness and aches. SARS causes lungs. heart or liver failure.

MERS

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is a disease caused by MERS-CoV coronavirus. The symptoms of MERS include- fever, coughing and breathlessness. It is mostly linked to the people who have recently trvelled to the Arabian Peninsula.
