Beetroot, scientifically known as beta Vulgaris, is a root vegetable. It is also known as red beet, table beet, and garden beet. There is various kinds of beetroots with respect to their color- yellow, white, pink, or dark purple.

Beets consists of 88% of water. It contains 43 calories, 8-10% of carbs, and 2-3% of fiber. Beets are highly rich in various vitamins and minerals. It contains folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C. Beets also contain some natural plant compounds like- Betanin, Inorganic nitrate, and Vulgaxanthin.

1. Due to the high presence of nitrates in beets, it can lower the blood pressure by up to 4-10 mmHg which further reduces the risk of many heart diseases like heart attacks, heart failure, and stroke.

2. Dietary nitrates present in beetroots improves the efficiency of mitochondria, which are responsible for producing energy in your cells, and hence enhance the athletic performance.

3. Betalains, pigments present in beetroots, possess anti-inflammatory properties which help in reducing the risk of chronic inflammation which includes- obesity, heart diseases, liver disease, and cancer.

4. Beetroots are highly rich in water and low in calories and also contain a moderate amount of protein and fiber. All this helps weight loss by reducing appetite and overall calorie intake.
