Lentils are edible seeds that belong to the legume family. There are different types of lentils on the basis of their color. Some common types of lentils are- Brown lentil, Puy lentil, Green lentil, Yellow and red lentil, Beluga lentil, etc.

Lentils are highly nutritious and are rich in various minerals, protein, and fiber. Lentils contain folate, iron, manganese, phosphorus, thiamin, potassium, and vitamin B6. They also provide riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, magnesium, zinc, copper, and selenium.

1. Lentils are the high suppliers of fiber, folic acid, and potassium which keeps heart healthy. Increasing the intake of the fiber reduces the level of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. Potassium, calcium, and magnesium present in lentils help in decreasing blood pressure.

2. Lentils are rich in folate which helps in preventing neural tube defects in newborn babies. Also, it reduces the risk of gestational diabetes in pregnant women.

3. Selenium present in lentils helps in reducing the rates of colorectal, prostate, lung, bladder, skin, esophageal, and gastric cancers. It reduces the rates of tumors to grow.

4. Deficiency of iron is the common cause of fatigue. Lentils are a good source of nonheme iron which decreases the rates of fatigue.

5. High fiber in lentils increases the feeling of fullness and hence reduces appetite. This reduces the calorie intake in the body and results in weight loss and prevents constipation.
